Nickel Alloy Product Form

Nickel Alloy Wire and Precision Strip for Springs, Welding and Forming

Select wire, ribbon and strip by alloy, cross-section, temper, dimensional tolerance, edge, surface, package and end-use performance.

Quick Answer: J&A Alloy supplies round wire, spring wire, welding wire, fine wire, flat and shaped wire, precision cold-rolled strip, slit coil, foil and cut lengths in nickel alloys and super stainless steels. Because wire and strip standards are alloy- and application-specific, a valid RFQ should identify the exact product form, governing standard, dimensions, condition, mechanical properties, surface/edge and spool or coil requirements.

Spring Wire

Cold-drawn or precipitation-hardenable wire for helical, torsion, wave and retaining springs under corrosion or elevated-temperature duty.

Welding Wire & Strip Electrodes

Solid wire, rods and strip electrodes classified for the welding or overlay process; specify classification, diameter/width, package, cast and helix.

Fine Wire & Filament

Small-diameter wire for mesh, filtration, instrumentation, electronics and precision assemblies with tight diameter and surface requirements.

Flat, Square & Shaped Wire

Rolled or drawn rectangular, square, half-round, keyed and custom-profile wire supplied to a controlled cross-sectional drawing.

Precision Cold-Rolled Strip

Tight-gauge strip for diaphragms, bellows, springs, seals, shims and formed components, with controlled temper, flatness and surface.

Slit Strip & Oscillate-Wound Coil

Narrow slit coils with selected edge, burr direction, camber and coil build; oscillate winding can support longer continuous processing runs.

Foil, Ribbon & Cut Lengths

Ultra-thin strip, narrow ribbon, straightened wire and cut lengths prepared for stamping, winding, joining or precision fabrication.

Nickel Alloy Wire & Strip FAQ

What nickel alloy wire and strip forms are available?

Common forms include round wire, spring wire, welding wire, fine wire, flat or shaped wire, precision cold-rolled strip, slit coil, spring strip, foil and straightened cut lengths. Availability depends on alloy, temper, dimensions, quantity and governing specification.

What is the difference between flat wire and strip?

There is no universal width-only rule that works for every standard. Flat wire is generally produced by drawing or rolling wire and may have controlled shaped edges, while strip is a flat-rolled product supplied in coils or cut lengths. The purchase order should identify the governing specification, cross-section, edge, temper and dimensional tolerances.

Which ASTM standards cover nickel alloy wire?

Coverage is alloy-specific. ASTM B166 covers listed nickel-chromium and related alloy rod, bar and wire; ASTM B164 covers Monel 400/405 rod, bar and cold-worked wire; ASTM B649 covers selected alloy bar and wire. Other alloys or end uses may require AMS, AWS, ISO or customer specifications, so wire coverage must be checked rather than inferred from a bar standard.

Which standard covers nickel alloy welding wire?

AWS A5.14/A5.14M is a common American classification route for bare nickel and nickel-alloy welding electrodes and rods. ISO 18274:2023 classifies solid wire electrodes, strip electrodes, wires and rods for fusion welding of nickel and nickel alloys. Classification, diameter, spool, cast/helix and shielding or process requirements should be stated.

What replaced EN 10270-3 for stainless spring wire?

EN 10270-3:2011 was withdrawn and replaced by EN ISO 6931-1:2020, based on ISO 6931-1:2016, for stainless steel spring wire. This stainless standard must not be assumed to cover nickel-alloy spring wire such as X-750.

Are ISO 9724 and ISO 6208 current nickel alloy product standards?

No. ISO 9724:1992 for nickel-alloy wire and drawing stock and ISO 6208:1992 for plate, sheet and strip are withdrawn. They may appear on legacy drawings but should not be selected as default current procurement standards without contractual review.

What should be specified for precision strip?

State alloy, material standard, thickness, width, coil ID/OD or weight, temper or heat-treatment condition, tensile or hardness range, flatness, camber, burr direction and height, edge type, surface finish, grain direction, slit tolerance and required inspection documents.

What information is needed for a wire or strip RFQ?

Provide alloy/UNS or EN grade, product type, standard and edition, diameter or thickness and width, section profile, temper, quantity, spool or coil requirements, surface and edge condition, mechanical properties, welding classification if applicable, inspection documents and destination.
