Quick Selection Guide

If your service involves...Start with these alloysWhy
Sulfuric acid or phosphoric acidIncoloy 825, Incoloy 20, Hastelloy C-276These alloys combine nickel, chromium, molybdenum and sometimes copper for acid corrosion resistance.
Severe chloride plus acid corrosionHastelloy C-276, Hastelloy C-22High molybdenum and chromium content improves resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and mixed acids.
Caustic soda or hot alkaliNickel 200, Nickel 201Commercially pure nickel is widely used for caustic alkali; Nickel 201 is preferred at higher temperatures.
Seawater, brine or marine equipmentMonel 400, Inconel 625, Monel K500Nickel-copper and nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys are common starting points for chloride-rich marine service.
FGD scrubber or wet chlorine conditionsHastelloy C-276, Hastelloy C-22, Inconel 625These environments often require alloys with strong chloride and oxidizing-media resistance.

Final alloy selection should consider medium concentration, temperature, pressure, chloride level, impurities, flow condition and applicable engineering standard.

Hydrofluoric acidMonel 400, Nickel 200/201Final selection depends strongly on acid concentration, aeration and contaminants.

Corrosion Resistant Alloy vs Stainless Steel

Stainless steels are suitable for many general industrial environments, but severe acids, hot alkali, seawater chlorides, FGD scrubbers and mixed chemical media can exceed the corrosion resistance of standard stainless grades. Corrosion resistant nickel alloys are selected when the project needs stronger resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, reducing acids or high-temperature chemical attack.

When stainless steel may be enoughWhen corrosion resistant alloy is recommended
Mild atmospheric or low-chloride serviceHigh chloride seawater, brine, sour or acidic service
Moderate temperature and neutral pHHigh temperature, low pH, oxidizing or reducing acid media
Standard process water and general equipmentHeat exchangers, scrubbers, reactors, acid tanks and critical process piping

Corrosion Resistant Alloy FAQ

What is a corrosion resistant alloy?

A corrosion resistant alloy is a metal alloy designed to resist chemical attack, acid corrosion, chloride pitting, caustic alkali or seawater corrosion better than standard carbon steel or stainless steel.

Which alloy is best for sulfuric acid?

Incoloy 825 and Alloy 20 are common starting points for sulfuric acid, while Hastelloy C-276 may be considered for more severe mixed acid or chloride conditions.

What alloy is used for caustic soda?

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 are widely used for caustic alkali service. Nickel 201 is typically preferred for higher-temperature applications because of its lower carbon content.

Hastelloy C-276 vs C-22: which should I choose?

C-276 is widely used for severe reducing and chloride environments, while C-22 offers strong resistance in many oxidizing chloride media. Final choice depends on medium, temperature and contaminants.

What information is needed for an RFQ?

Please send alloy grade, UNS number, product form, size, quantity, standard, material condition, inspection requirement and destination country. Service conditions help us recommend a practical grade.

Can J&A Alloy supply custom sizes?

Yes. J&A Alloy can quote standard and custom sizes for plate, sheet, pipe, tube, bar, wire, flange, fitting and forging requirements depending on alloy and quantity.
