Hastelloy B2 Supplier & Manufacturer

Hastelloy B2 is a wrought nickel-molybdenum alloy designed to provide exceptional resistance to hydrochloric acid across a wide range of concentrations and temperatures. The alloy contains very low carbon and silicon levels, significantly reducing carbide precipitation in weld heat-affected zones and improving corrosion resistance after welding.

Unlike stainless steels and many conventional nickel alloys, Hastelloy B2 performs exceptionally well in strongly reducing environments. It offers excellent resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and acid attack, making it one of the most reliable materials for severe chemical processing applications.

The alloy is widely used in reactors, pressure vessels, piping systems, heat exchangers, and process equipment handling hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and other reducing chemicals.

Corrosion Resistance

Hastelloy B2 is considered one of the best materials available for handling hydrochloric acid. Its high molybdenum content provides excellent resistance to corrosion in reducing media where stainless steels and many nickel alloys are unsuitable.

The alloy demonstrates outstanding resistance to hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid under reducing conditions, phosphoric acid, acetic acid, and hydrogen chloride gas. It also offers exceptional protection against pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking.

However, Hastelloy B2 is not recommended for strongly oxidizing environments containing ferric salts, cupric salts, nitric acid, or oxygen-rich solutions. In such conditions, Hastelloy C276 is generally the preferred material.

High Temperature Performance

Property Performance
Recommended Continuous Service Temperature Up to approximately 650°C
Thermal Stability Good
Oxidation Resistance Limited
Reducing Atmosphere Resistance Excellent

Although Hastelloy B2 is primarily selected for corrosion resistance rather than elevated-temperature strength, it maintains stable mechanical properties in moderately high-temperature reducing environments.

For applications involving severe oxidation or prolonged exposure to temperatures above 650°C, alloys such as Hastelloy C276, Inconel 625, or Haynes 230 may provide superior performance.

Welding & Fabrication

Hastelloy B2 can be fabricated using conventional nickel alloy processing methods and offers excellent weldability when proper procedures are followed.

Recommended welding processes include GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW, and Plasma Arc Welding. Filler metals such as ERNiMo-7 or matching Hastelloy B2 consumables are commonly used.

The alloy exhibits excellent cold-forming and hot-working characteristics. Due to its low carbon and silicon content, welded joints maintain excellent corrosion resistance and are less susceptible to heat-affected zone attack.

During fabrication, contamination from iron, sulfur, or oxidizing compounds should be avoided to preserve corrosion performance.
